Before it was a weekend escape, Half Moon Bay was farm country, and it still is: pumpkins, artichokes, flowers, houseplants and Christmas trees grow between the hills and the sea.

By 1916 Half Moon Bay artichokes were known from San Francisco to New York, and the town had the largest mushroom farm west of Chicago. (History of San Mateo County, 1916)
