Mavericks

Mavericks breaks about half a mile outside Pillar Point Harbor. For fifteen years one local surfer rode it alone; now the whole big-wave world knows its name.

Discover Mavericks

Mavericks is named after Maverick, a white-haired German Shepherd who swam out after his owner's friends in March 1967. (Wikipedia)

Jeff Clark could see the break from Half Moon Bay High School. In 1975, at 17, he paddled out and rode it, and he surfed it alone for fifteen years. (Wikipedia)

NOAA sea-floor maps from 2007 showed why the wave is so big: a sloping ramp on the bottom focuses the swell's energy. In 1999 Sarah Gerhardt became the first woman to surf Mavericks. (Wikipedia)
