Poplar Beach lies immediately south of Half Moon Bay State Beach and is a municipal beach rather than part of the state park. It is open to horses and to leashed dogs. The state beach’s southernmost unit, Francis Beach, has a campground with 52 sites. The waters off the state beach hold flatfish, English sole, rockfish, surfperch, Pacific herring and lingcod.
The state beach to its north is four miles of sand in 181 acres, made up of Roosevelt, Dunes, Venice and Francis Beaches, and it was established in 1956. Along its length, Pilarcitos Creek and Frenchmans Creek both reach the bay.
