Princeton-by-the-Sea

A small unincorporated harbor community just north of Half Moon Bay’s city limits, home to Pillar Point Harbor’s restaurants and docks.

Princeton, as locals call it, sits west of Highway 1 directly across from El Granada and overlooks Pillar Point Harbor. Mavericks Beach, Pillar Point Bluff and the Air Force station are just to the west, and the Half Moon Bay Airport lies north of it. It shares a ZIP code with Half Moon Bay, so addresses there are often listed as Half Moon Bay.

The Chiguan Ohlone, who numbered about 50, called the place Ssatumnumo, according to mission records. It has been a boating destination and a tourist spot since the early 1900s, when the Princeton Inn Hotel opened.

Level ground and the special microhabitat of the harbor draw many seabirds.
