On October 10, 1940, the Army founded the Pillar Point Military Reservation on the headland as part of the harbor defenses of San Francisco, with large guns, anti-aircraft machine guns, searchlights and bunkers, because there was concern about a Japanese attack. A radar for tracking ships was added in June 1944 and removed in 1946, and the reservation closed in 1949.
The Navy reopened the site on September 4, 1959 as a missile tracking station, and later it passed to the Air Force. Today it is a U.S. Space Force facility on 48 acres overlooking the harbor and Mavericks.
From 1967 to 1972 the station tracked Minuteman II missiles.
