The airport lies between Princeton-by-the-Sea and Moss Beach, on the coast just north of the harbor. The California State Highway Department built it in 1942 for the U.S. Army as an auxiliary field for the Salinas Army Air Base.
It is one of the wartime defenses that shaped the Coastside, along with the Pillar Point Military Reservation, which was set up in 1940 with guns, searchlights and radar to guard the approach to San Francisco.
San Mateo County acquired the airport from the Navy in 1947. The field, officially named Eddie Andreini Sr. Airfield, covers 325 acres and has a 5,000-foot runway, and the county describes it as an important business, transportation and emergency-service asset.
