Rancho Corral de Tierra was granted in 1839. It covered the country north of Pilarcitos Creek, and its southern portion was given to Tiburcio Vásquez. Corral de tierra means earthen corral.
The Vásquez family settled on the north bank of the creek and the Miramontes family on the south bank. The name survives today in the protected open space around Montara, and Pillar Point Bluff was once part of the grant.
After the missions were secularized in 1834, the land was divided into ranchos. Cattle ranching became the main agricultural activity, and the hide and tallow trade the main economic activity.
